This overview of Aalesund is taken from Fjellstua, a restaurant perched on the hill above town. Aalesund translates to "Eel Sound" and gets it name from the curved shape of the body of water which cuts the town in two. |

Fjellstua is shown perched on the hill, upper right, above. The wooden structures of the city succumbed to a fire in 1904 and the town was rebuilt in stone in the Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau style, giving it a unique character. |
